The reason for this blog to be so quiet in the last months is just because the workload has increased quite a lot at TAIK.

So, for now on I'll stop writing here... I'm putting more efforts on working for my thesis and on the Design Museum project (to which the above picture relates to). Keep visiting those blogs, tips and advice are always welcome!

To make the most of the last northern sunlight beams I joined a couple of pals to Nuuksio, a natural park at the doors of Helsinki. Flying squirrels are supposed to be living there; I saw none. But for a couple of times I could almost see some elves stepping out from beneath the mushrooms!

FAbRICA

In Portugal is almost impossible to make a living only from producing art, but some utopists keep figthing against the stream. One fine example was the FAbRICA exihbition organized by some good friends from FBAUL. They rented an old warehouse at Bairro Alto and joined in one exihbition a series of artistic works: painting, photography, installation, music, live performers and VJing. The show was running for 3 weekends and was featured in several cultural city guides. I gave them a hand by designing the catalogue and joined the party on the opening night... it was the perfect farewell to Lisbon!

Migrating south for the summer

Well, having seen frustrated the expectations about that spaceship, the return trip to Lisbon took its usual 11 hours (between leaving home in Helsinki and arriving home in Lisbon). This summer seemed quite long though since I was allowed to spend two whole months enjoying family and friends. The first half of it was dedicated to preparing my brother's wedding (I mean it took a whole month for me to find some fancy clothes and then another couple of days to design and make their mass book... my mom helped me with that one!). Yes, pictures will come. But now I'm just posting some photos from the holidays that followed, spent with parents and granny in Algarve: Quarteira and Sagres, sand, sun and sea...

To fly faster

The truth is I've lived here for more than two years and so far no friends had visited me. But this summer there was one more Diana in Helsinki! Both Dianas were happy strolling around the parks and gardens of Helsinki, the forest in Tampere and a couple of art galleries in Tallin. And while in Linnanmäki they found a superb technology gadget which could make the life of the first Diana so much pleasant and easier: a spaceship! So this Diana ran hastily inside hoping the device would make the trip between Helsinki and Lisbon much faster and more confortable, but only to find out the flying machine was only departing to return to the starting point...

The Lusofin summit for the chourizo, linguiça and grilled pork fillet

Suffering from a shortage of portuguese presence, but abundance of pork meat deriveds, the Lusofin grilling event opened its doors to representatives from Spain, Czech Republic, Finland and South Africa.

The attendants could only miss the Casal Garcia (green wine) to completely surrender. They were also enlightened about the Tired Horse soup, a delicacy from good'ol northern portuguese rural times.

By the end of the summit, both representatives of the lusitanian committee offered their guests several pieces of grilled pork fillet as souvenirs, and congratulated one another for the successful event.

In Finland there is hardly any social claiming on the 1st of May. It's more like a drinking party for students. But there is not much to claim about, since this is already one of the countries in the world with more social protection for the workers.

In the middle of the drunken students, a few "cleaning people" were trying to keep Kaivopuisto (one of Helsinki's parks) looking neat. And because this is after all the "working class day", here is the photo as a tribute!

Back to life

Only one week after spending Easter in Portugal, dressed up in wool sweaters and jackets... it's possible to be in Finland wearing short sleeves in a fine afternoon grilling food by the sea!

The barbecue organized by the student union of MediaLab - Mela - marks he beginning of summer and the short way towards the end of this academic year. UIAH's second semester was quite intense until mid March - the reason of my absence from the blog - but now we are free to enjoy the consequences of global warming :) barbecueing in mid April in Coldland, under a splendid sunshine.

Yesterday I went to visit the local aquarium. Just to remember how life is away from the ice and cold :) The place is called Sea Life and it is recomendable to all age groups!

Projects at UIAH

...so what's up at the Media Lab? This semester we are planning (and making) a live performance event utilizing interactive narration in spatial design, under the theme "Live Inside a Reptile Tent". This project goes towards the more artistic side of the Media Lab. The end result will be a show presented at the Lume Studio Stage. The aim of the event is to recreate an electronic freak-show experience.

2007 at the Doors of the Sun

I went to a place in Lisbon called Doors of the Sun (Portas do Sol) to take some pictures of the same spot I had photographed 10 years ago when I was a student at the Fine Arts school. I could see some mending here and there but many buildings are quite degradated, or covered (for repair?). From a distance however, the old city still looks beautiful.

I'm returning to Helsinki tomorrow...

The place where I live in Portugal, about 20km from Lisbon city centre, is quite famous for being a good surf spot. Even in December the surf school is open and many surfers are riding the waves! In old times, also the wine that was produced in local farms was regarded as one of the best in the region. The place is Carcavelos.

From Tampere to Helsinki, 2 hours distance

Tampere was my home for almost a year and a half... On the 1st October I definetly left the Tammela apartment, brought my last suitcase on the train to Helsinki and thus ended this cicle. The only thing I left now in Tampere was friends. But there will be time to visit them!

The kick-off party for the school-year: we celebrated the ending of Understanding Media and Design, the 4 week module that presented us the MA structure and its different study areas. This was also the presentation party of the new students to the 2nd year's. The theme was the "post-it" (a sponsorship of 20.000 post-it granted thanks to Hele!), used to decorate the space. But they soon became a cult object and throughout the night ended up glued everywhere, with nice messages from everybody!

ASEM in Helsinki

Helsinki is holding the Asia-Europe meeting (ASEM). A group of anarchist activists summoned up a demonstration against the exploitation that is going on in asian countries, pointing the fact that no discussion about human rights is being held, and questioning their authoritarian governments. This organization, with no political affiliation declared, summoned up the demonstration from a website called "Smash ASEM" and promised some rioting in Helsinki center for the afternoon of 9th September, in solidarity with riots being held in China.

There was only about 250-300 people gathered for the demonstration, still, the police aparatus was quite surprising, I mean, for a country where nothing ever happens: 200 anti-riot policeman on the spot, 5 buses ready (in case they decide everybody will go to jail?) and a couple hundred more policeman in neighbouring streets. There was literally more police than demonstrators!

The policeman made a human cord trapping the demonstrators between two buildings even before they went anywhere, holding the siege for 3 hours. At least for the time that I was watching the thing nothing really happened - a couple of bottles flying through the air, some bumping against the police, but nobody really got hurt. Even so, they said police took for questioning around 100 people.

Man, I have seen more fighting and damage being made on a normal saturday drinking night here, and nobody even cares to call the police then...

On the 20th August there was a guided tour in portuguese to the contemporary art museum of Helsinki - Kiasma.

The warning for this was spread by the portuguese language community Lusofin, and in return some 15 "ports" showed up from several places in Finland. Wow! It had been a while since I saw so many together!
